What should a bathroom layout show?
Show finished room dimensions, actual fixture sizes, openings and the space people need to use each fixture. Then add the hidden routes and maintenance access that make the design buildable. An attractive plan with a missing drain route or an unusable door swing is still an incomplete plan.
Work through three passes in order. The first establishes what is being installed. The second tests daily use. The third tests construction and future service. Keep all three on the same drawing so solving one problem does not quietly create another.
Pass one: do the selected fixtures fit?
Record the toilet model and rough-in requirements, basin projection, shower or tub dimensions, enclosure operation and any furniture-style storage. Manufacturer drawings are more useful than a generic symbol. Mark existing windows, structural walls, ceiling slopes, beams and equipment that constrains the space.
Allow for finished wall and floor assemblies. If a sketch is based on framing dimensions, new finishes can change the usable space. Pass two: can people use the room comfortably?
Trace entry, door closure, approach, bathing, drying and exit. Ask where towels, toiletries and waste bins will sit; loose objects can consume circulation that looked clear on paper. Think about night use, lighting controls and whether another person needs to assist.

Pass three: can the room be built and serviced?
Mark the proposed drain and vent routes, water isolation, exhaust path, electrical scope and any equipment access. Ask what must be opened in adjoining rooms. If a concealed valve, pump or service panel needs access, establish where it will be and what furniture or finishes could block it later.
Review structure before proposing cuts or recesses. A primary-suite conversion may affect a bedroom wall or floor system; a bump-out adds exterior and foundation questions. Each has a different design scope even when the finished bathroom looks similar.
How should you compare two layouts?
Use the same priorities for both. Score them qualitatively for daily use, lost storage, drainage certainty, structural changes, exterior work and maintenance access. Do not turn the exercise into an invented “feasibility score” that implies engineering approval. The point is to make tradeoffs visible.
For example, a hypothetical Layout A keeps a verified utility route and gives up a linen closet. Layout B retains storage but moves the toilet across a beam and uses a narrower entry. The meaningful next step is to resolve Layout B’s routing and use-space constraints before treating its appearance as an advantage.
What should be settled before ordering?
Confirm the chosen products, finished dimensions, drain strategy, door/enclosure operation and permit path. For a curbless design, review floor-height and accessibility planning before purchasing a tray or drain. For any shower, coordinate the waterproofing assembly with the selected layout.
